There's a version of hemp that lives in most people's heads: coarse, beige, a little sackcloth-y, the fabric equivalent of a granola bar. It's the reason we get asked, gently, why a "streetwear" brand builds its hats out of it.
Here's the answer: because hemp is one of the toughest, most technically capable natural fibres there is — and the "rough" reputation was never about the fibre. It was about how it used to be processed.
Myth: Hemp is scratchy and cheap
For most of its 12,000-year history, hemp cloth was made with crude retting and combing methods, so it came out coarse — good enough for sails, rope, and workwear, not for anything worn close to skin. That processing gap, not the fibre itself, is where the "poor man's fabric" reputation comes from. Modern processing changed the equation: today's hemp textiles are spun fine enough for apparel, and the fibre actually gets softer with every wash instead of pilling or breaking down, the way a good pair of raw denim jeans does.
That's not a coincidence. Hemp is a bast fibre — pulled from the stalk, not a seed pod — which gives it a naturally high tensile strength. It takes dye beautifully, holds structure, and ages like leather rather than degrading like synthetic fill. Luxury fashion has quietly caught on to this over the last few years, using hemp in tailoring and eveningwear specifically because it does what natural luxury textiles are supposed to do: get better, not worse, with time.
Myth: Hemp is "just" an eco statement
Hemp isn't in our hats to make a point. It's there to do a job — and the job it does best is protecting your head from the sun.
Hemp fibre contains natural lignin, the same compound that gives the plant its structural strength, and lignin happens to absorb UV radiation. Combine that with hemp's naturally dense, tightly woven structure, and you get a fabric that blocks UV light more effectively than most other natural fibres — independent testing has repeatedly placed hemp fabric at UPF 50, meaning it blocks roughly 98–99% of UVA and UVB rays, without any chemical treatment or coating required. Linen, by comparison, needs a much lighter, looser weave to breathe, which is part of why its untreated UPF ratings sit far lower.
For a hat, that's the whole point. A cap or bucket hat's entire job is shading your face, ears, and scalp — the parts of you that get hit hardest and burn fastest. A hat made from a fibre with built-in, needs-no-chemicals sun protection isn't a wellness trend. It's the material doing exactly what you bought a hat to do.
Why hemp is our base
