Sportswear brands love the word "wicking." It's on every tag, every ad, every drop-down filter. But wicking is only step one of three. Sweat has to move, absorb, and release before you actually feel dry — and a fabric can be brilliant at one stage and terrible at the next.
Here's what's actually happening under your hat.
Stage 1: Wicking — moving water sideways
Wicking is water travelling along the outside of fibres, pulled by capillary action. The gaps between yarns act like tiny tubes, drawing sweat sideways and spreading it over a wider area so it can leave the cloth faster. Two things control it: how readily the fibre surface takes water, and how fine the channels between yarns are.
Worth knowing: a fabric that wicks brilliantly but holds nothing just moves sweat from your skin to your shirt. Good wicking still needs somewhere for the water to go.
Stage 2: Absorbing — taking water in
Absorbing is water taken inside the fibre itself, not just sitting on the surface. Cellulose and protein fibres bond with water molecules, so moisture disappears into the fibre wall rather than pooling on top — which is why natural fabric feels dry for longer before it feels wet.
This is measured as moisture regain: the weight of water a fibre holds at 20°C and 65% relative humidity, as a share of its dry weight. Polyester sits around 0.4%. Cotton sits around 8.5%. Lyocell sits at 11–13%.
Stage 3: Drying — letting water go
Drying is water leaving the cloth as vapour, back into the air. Two things set the speed: how much surface the water is spread over, and how tightly the fibre is holding it. Surface water evaporates fast. Water bonded inside a fibre takes longer to release.
That's the trade-off in one sentence: fast drying and high absorption pull against each other. Polyester wins on speed by refusing to hold water at all. Natural fibres take the sweat in and release it steadily — which is why they feel dry, rather than just drying fast.
So where does cotton actually sit?
Cotton is the fibre most people think they already understand, and it's more complicated than "good" or "bad." Here's the honest breakdown:
- Wicking: good, initially. Cotton's natural structure pulls moisture along the fibre well at first.
- Absorbing: high — around 8.5% moisture regain, well above polyester's near-zero. This is why cotton feels genuinely soft and dry against skin, not clammy.
- Drying: slow. Once cotton has taken water in, it holds onto it. That's the trade-off — the same bonding that makes it feel dry early makes it feel heavy and damp later, especially once it saturates.
In plain terms: cotton is honest and comfortable early, and can get weighed down over a long, sweaty day. That's exactly why we don't build every Rawa piece on cotton alone.
Why this shapes how we build
We're a 0% synthetic brand — not because natural fibres are automatically superior at everything, but because we'd rather be honest about a real trade-off than hide behind a fabric that refuses to absorb anything at all. Polyester's "wicking" is really just non-absorption wearing a marketing label.
So where cotton appears in a Rawa piece, we blend it — usually with hemp or linen — to balance its early comfort against its slower dry time. Hemp brings faster moisture release and structure; linen brings breathability and quick-drying strength. The result is a natural-fibre hat that doesn't ask you to choose between feeling good now and feeling good three hours in.
